Oddities following XP Pro reinstall

I just reinstalled XP Pro, along with SP2 and am now experiencing the
following oddities:
- screen rendering is very slow, any scrolling appears as if the computer is
struggling to render the page. NOTE: the blue user login screen upon bootup
also renders very slow and jerky versus a smooth fade in. Is this a driver
issue?
- what i remember to be default XP sounds such as the alert beep are not the
same now...they are shrill windows 3.1 esque types of noises

Do these symptoms sound like I did something wrong during the reinstall?
Thanks in advance for any troubleshooting advise you may have.

Have you loaded the motherboard/video/audio drivers?

Did you reformat the hard disk before reinstalling? And, have you downloaded
the latest drivers for your sound & video, from the web sites of their
respective manufacturers?
