Display settings problem

Ok, I apoligize now for the potential long thread...

My display settings will not display correctly. In fact, I can't even get anything to change(colors). 1st example is if I choose to change the desktop color, it won't change. It shows it changing in the preview panel, but doesn't in reality. BUT..i can see the real change when i shutdown or startup, i see it displayed correctly for about 1-2 secs before it blips back to this grey background. Also, as far as desktop backgrounds go, none will show up unless i choose the 'stretch' option.

This problem has "leaked" over into IE(web pages won't display right, i get my current background color of grey, regardless of the web site, and pulldown or sidebar buttons are also messed up), outlook express(mail newsletters don't show up correctly) and to media player(colors wrong and buttons messed up).

I have tried Opera and the web pages show up correctly. My games still run fine, so my graphics card should be ok, and I dl new drivers for it. I also reinstalled win xp pro overtop of old, nothing changed. Based on the fact that all messed up apps are microsoft, I assume I lost some sort of internal file/program but do not know what else to do.

I am going to crossthread this also, sorry if you see it elsewhere, but I need help.

Comp specs:
amd Athlon xp 2400
256 ddr-sdram
asus a7v333 mb
GeForce 4 Ti 4200

Robert,

Set Wallpaper to none, then try again. Also, if you have made any changes
in Accessibility, revert them. If you are having theme issues (classic vs.
xp):
