I just did a fresh install of windows XP. The screen
resolution is stuck at 640 x 480 and the color at 16 bit.
It is set as Default Monitor and I know that I need to
select the monitor that I am using, but the properties
button is grayed out so I have no way of changing the
monitor. Any ideas?

I'm running an old non-plug and play monitor that is
also installed at "default monitor" . I've had no problems
setting the res, color depth and refresh rate.
I suspect your problem has something to do with the interaction
of the monitor and the graphics driver.
Is your monitor plug and play? Does it have a disk with
and inf file on it?

What video card do you have and have you reinstalled those
drivers?

.

Try installing the monitor from the Add Remove Hardware.
But I think that the problem is not with the monitor but
with your video card, so you sould try and remove it from
the list in Device Manager and reinstalling it.

Do you have the driver for your video card installed? If
not install it and then try again!

David, you must install the chipset ( or motherboard or system ) drivers
that came with the computer in order for the extra capabilities of your
graphics hardware to be recognised by Windows XP. Then install the VGA
drivers, if you haven't already. Without the chipset drivers installed, you
will have problems with other hardware devices not working, too.

It's not a monitor problem, its a video driver problem. Find the XP
video drivers for your card or onboard chipset and install them
according to the docs.
