Display Problem

Hi, My son's PC, running XP Home edition, started splitting the display
screen between his Background choice and about 1/3rd of the panel on the left
(vertical) is now set to show "Folder tasks, Other Places and Details" (all
expandable). It's like it's an open explorer folder or something.
Have tried several desktop resets, gone into explorer to try to reset
options etc. nothing worked so far...just want a plain old simple background!
