display installer gone

After contract IT guy joined my system (Win 2000) to
company network, the display icon in the control panel
disappeared. Can not right click on desktop and get
installer to change resolution, background, etc. How to
recover? IT guy has no clue. Tried to repair using
add/remove programs and also booting to win2000 CD but no
change. PLease help - can't ahndle dfault of 640 x 480 and
16 colors.

Sounds like there's a group policy in place. Talk to a domain admin about
this.

I concur.
The settings are in group policy in User Configuration > Administrative
Templates > Control Panel > Display
Since they are User policy settings, logging in as a *local* user (not on
the network) should prevent the settings from being applied
