Reinstall and display problems

We were forced to reinstall XP. However, the display is about quarter the
normal size and centered on the monitor. The screen resolution is 640 by
480, High color (16 bit). I've tried to change the screen resolution, but it
will not change as I have no other options. I have worked-around it by going
through properties, settings, advanced, adapter then list all modes then
selected 1024 by 768 resolution, but it then only gives me color quality of
low 8 bit.
Any help is appreciated...
