Display after installation

After I installed XP Pro on my Dell laptop, the display screen became very
small with a black border around it. I tried to change the display settings,
but it will not allow it (It does not give any other options). I installed
the drivers and utilities cd that came with the dell,but it did not do
anything.
Also, all the programs that come with XP Pro were not installed. I just
have a basic windows screen with no desktop icons. When I checked the
"add/delete programs" menu, there was nothing there.
Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

Windows XP video adapter driver designed for your specific Dell
model laptop.

Windows XP is an "operating system" and does not include programs
such as Microsoft Office or an antivirus program. You'll need to
purchase those programs separately.
