Display adapter not in device manager

Hi, I'm having the following problem with WinXP Home.

I was running a 2.4 GHZ CPU with GeForce4 Ti4200 for the last two years
without any problem. Suddenly, I started getting blue screens on startup.
The WinXP splash screen comes up, then after a few seconds a blue screen
flashes up too quickly to read and the PC reboots. This behavior repeats.

I tried booting from the WinXP CD and it failed to boot the system. I got
a blue screen with error 0x0000007B (0xF7AFC63C, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000,
0x00000000) and a notice about the hard drive perhaps being bad. So I
replaced the hard drive - the same behavior continued.

I could always boot into Safe Mode, or boot up with VGA support, before
and after HD replacement. Also, in the Device Manager, there's NO DISPLAY
ADAPTER listed. When I right-click on the desktop, and choose
properties.. settings, it says "monitor on " (ie, it's blank where the
display adapter should be named).

Any ideas how I can get my display adapter shown correctly in the Device
Manager?

regards, Mike

Hi Mike,
What is that you did last before this problem came up? Made any hardware or
software changes?

You also mentioned on replacing the hard drive. What did you do after
installing the new hard drive? Re-installed XP?

There were no hardware changes before the problem started. However, I
make software changes aplenty - I do a lot of experimentation! But
everything seemed to be working together OK. There wasn't any single
event that I can pinpoint as the beginning of the problem.

Because I got the 0x0000007B INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE error, I thought
the hard drive was bad, so I bought a new one and installed it. It was a
Western Digital 120GB and I used the WD Data Lifeguard CD that came with
the drive to do the installation. I transferred the existing filesystem
to the new drive using the utilities - did NOT do a fresh install of
WinXP Home. So, I carried over any possible registry problems to the new
drive.

As I mentioned, installation of new HD did not stop the bootup problem,
and so I read deeper into the 0x0000007B error message. I thought maybe
my video card was kaput, because

1) no Video Adapters were listed in the Device Manager, and
2) right-clicking on the desktop and choosing Properties..Settings
displayed only a blank instead of the adapter name.

I ran the new hardware wizard, but it didn't detect the video card
either. So, I guessed that when the system was trying to boot up, it
couldn't recognize or initialize the video card/drivers. This led me to
install a new AGP card.

I also wonder if the device settings in the registry are messed up?

The problem turned out to be a bad CD-ROM drive. In the BIOS, I had set
it up to boot from CD, then hard drive, then floppy. The CD drive was not
responding correctly - this was leading to the BSOD and errors about the
boot device not working correctly.

Of course, by the time I figured out the problem, I already replaced the
hard drive and video card. But, hey, I got some nice upgrades!! LOL

If only... :( But thanks for the vote of confidence in my abilities!
There's hope for me yet, I guess :)
