Disk/partition unavailable after reinstall

I've noticed that when I install XP from CD "from the ground up", formatting the C drive, all old partitions on the machine gets flagged as unknown partition in disk manager. How can I get at the data on it? This was never a problem when I was running Win 2000.
 
In Disk Management, right click the partition in question and assign a drive letter.
