Disk management in xp

shannon

I'm a newbie in this area. I'm trying to repartition and
create additional logical drives, cause I heard and seen
my friend doing it before by going into disk management.
But when I right click on C drive under disk management,
the mark partition as active, delete partition and format
option is grey out. So there's no way I could partition
within disk management. Could anyone tell me where has I
go wrong?

If the C drive is already one large partition you cannot do anything with
it.
If there is available unpartitioned space on C or another drive then you
will be able to do what you require.
You cannot change the partition that Windows XP is currently running from
while it is running

You can only do that if your HDD contains unallocated space. if the whole of
the HDD is formatted as a drive, then you need a third-party tool to do it.

You can't partition the CURRENT drive through disk management. You can only
partition secondary drives that way. You can use Partition Magic to do this
but I believe, I don't know because I don't use it, that will only adjust
the sizes of the partitions etc.. As far as I know you actually have to wipe
the drive out in order to partition it and then use hte Windows CD to create
the partitions in whatever sizes you want.

But as I said I am not sure about exactly how boot magic works so before
taking my drastic step get boot magic and try it.

.Thanks to you guys for your advise, at least now I have
a better idea. How do I create available unpartition
space when I'm doing a fresh install of xp,is it by
creating an extended partition or additional logical
drive?

Try Partition Magic 8, it will do all the partitioning you want.

http://www.symantec.com/partitionmagic/ Read about it and buy it if you
want. There are other programs of this type and I am sure they are good, but
I have used one version or another for many years and found it invaluable.

What everyone seems not to be telling you is that you can actually
partition your HDD for XP but only once and only when you are doing a fresh
install with a HDD formatting. In other words. You can only specify
partitions and their size when first installing XP. Once you have done that
then you will not be able to change those partitions or their sizes from
withing the operating XP OS. So if you have nothing on the system you really
need to save or have it saved to CDs then start over. Simply start a new
install and choose to format the drive and then specify the name, and size
of the partition(s). Good luck.
