I'm not counting on being able to find anything I can just go in and
buy, but to purchase online. Two of the best-looking recommended
places were meritline.com and newegg.com and I am welcome to
suggestions of others. It means buying things sight unseen, without
being able to even talk to a clerk about different options and
properties, so I'm asking lots of advice of others' experiences ahead
of time.

Let's face it, a clerk is going to try and sell you what he has been
told to get rid of first. To people in high street stores especially
one disc is the same as another if they don't do the thing themselves
at home. Our biggest high street store in the UK for PC stuff (PC
World) would probably try to sell you an extended guarantee on your
discs too :O)
Online you can usually look at reviews from other users, see if
recently the discs have gone downhill etc, which is a great boon and
they're usually cheaper. Barring those tacky feeling discs there's
probably not much you could tell by looking at them whether they're
worth having or not.
