disk image backup programmes

Hi -

I am just about to purchase an external hard drive for my laptop (XP Pro
80gb) mainly for the purpose of restoring in its entirety the hard drive of
the laptop should anything catastrophic take place (an 'image' of the hard
drive). I have heard of Symantec's Ghost programme but are there any other
programmes to do this which you would recommend?
Thanks in advance for any advice,
Brian.

Acronis True Image is another popular one. There is also Image for
Windows by Terabyte Unlimited.

Thanks Rock for the information. I have had a quick look at each of the
programmes you suggest and am now downloading the trial version of Acronis
True Image. It looks like just the thing I need!
Thanks again,
Brian.

One that I've just come across thanks to PC Answers magazine is "DriveImage
XML" by Runtime Software. (http://www.runtime.org/dixml.htm). Like the
latest version of Ghost, it can image a drive while it's in use. However,
"DriveImage XML" is freeware.
It can also create image files across a network.

Ask the vendor of your backup program how you will be able to get access
to your USB drive to restore in case you need to.

Many thanks to everyone for the advice and suggested programmes. I have been
looking at them all and so far it seems to me that Acronis True Image might
be the easiest one to use! Am going to give it a try.

Once again, many thanks,
Brian.

BING is a great little program (definitely not "bloatware" !!)
and also give you the ability to resize / create /delete
partitions as well. You didn't say in the original
post, but I hope you are using USB2 not 1 ... USB1
is sssllllooowwwww ! I also have Acronis True Image,
(paid for both ver 8 and 9). Temp. gave up on it -
I was running into the same problems many others in
their support forums were seeing -- could not find
a drive, restore errors etc. You might want to check
out the support forums for Acronis and see if they
have version 9 "fixed" now (I hate things that claim
they made a backup, but when you go to use it, are
not able to do a successful restore from it)
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=65

Note that BING (and Image 4 DOS / Image 4 Windows)
from terabyte inc also have a support newsgroup you can
get to with your normal news reader and are quite
responsive. http://www.terabyteinc.com/support.html
Check out their "Terabyte sponsored newsgroups"

Great advice, Ed.

To the poster: I have used BING for years and also can speak for many
other MVP's.

You're welcome Brian. Whatever solution you go with make sure you do a
test backup and recovery to ensure it works and you know how to use it.
