Hi, I tried booting the computer and I got the message about Reboot and
select proper boot device.....

Then when I pressed enter, I got to Disk read error, press ctrl alt del to
restart. After it restarts, I get the long message again and then I press
enter, and I get in.

Could you please explain why doing this, and what will it change? Because if
it's on the hard drive your talking about, this is only half a year old.

Jose Gallardo

The IDE ribbon is the cable that attaches the hard drive to the motherboard
(IDE hard drives, not SATA ones). This cable is very low cost and usually
gets damaged. Even some manufacturers use cables of a low quality. More over
a bad IDE cable is a source of several problems. You can try this, it won't
hurt your machine.

(And Jane later adds...)
"My hard drive is ST380011A Seagate 80 Gig. I think that's SATA...."

Jane:
As Jose informed you, assuming you've indicated the correct model # of your
Seagate HD, it is indeed a PATA (not a SATA) HD. While the problem you're
experiencing may be due to a defective IDE data cable - that's the flat
ribbon-like data cable that connects between your HD and the motherboard's
IDE connector - as Jose suspects, the problem may lie elsewhere. It's nearly
impossible to pinpoint the cause at this point.

One of the first things you should do is download the HD diagnostic utility
from Seagate's web site and check out the drive to determine if it's
defective.

Are you familiar enough with the process of getting inside your computer
(I'm assuming yours is a desktop machine) to check out whether the cables
are correctly seated?

Did this problem occur "just out of the blue" one day? Everything was
working perfectly and all of a sudden this problem arose? Would you have any
clue as to a possible cause based on any programs you may have installed or
modified? Any hardware changes?

It all started out when the computer just kept on restarting on startup and
working again after several restarts. Then the computer couldn't project
anything on the screen so the video card is being replaced now. However, I
got another problem. (See the thread I made called the swift blue screen.)

After that incident, the blue screen never happened again but now I get this
problem. That's as much info I can give now.....

And does this Seagate utility involve not being logged into Windows? As in
doing it like a RAM utility test?

Large post - lots of replies -
Quoted from source (Microsoft) below:
"In almost all cases, (ID 11) these messages are posted because of hardware
problems. The source may be the controller or (more probably) a device that
is attached to the controller. The hardware problem can be poor cabling,
incorrect termination or transfer rate settings, slow device relinquishment
of the SCSI bus, a faulty device, or in rare cases, a poorly written device
driver."

suggest you check: support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314093 .

You need not be logged into Windows to perform the HD diagnostic text. The
floppy disk that will be created will be bootable.

If the results of the diagnostic test indicate the drive is not defective,
you might want to consider performing a Repair install of the XP operating
system. Possibly your problem may not be hardware-related, but there are
some corrupted system files that are causing the problem which the Repair
install will (hopefully) correct. If you do not know how to undertake that
process just do a Google search on "XP repair" and you'll be pointed to a
number of websites that have step-by-step instructions for undertaking this
process.

But before doing so, if you're able to connect the problem HD as a secondary
HD in your computer (or another computer) and are able to access its files &
folders, do so in order to copy any important/critical files before you
undertake the Repair process.

Jane, not plain ;) 64bit enabled ;)
Batteries not included. Braincell on vacation.

Jane:
My apologies. Somehow during the course of this thread I confused you with
the OP. It was purely inadvertent.

That's ok :) Sometimes these posts do get rather confusing, especially with
all the quotes within quotes!!
