disk drive installation error

Hi all

When I startup WinXP the "add new hardware" wizard starts to try to
install my hard drive ( ??? I can work normaly with my PC so I guess
the hard drive is already configured). I follow the steps and I get :
1º) The "has not passed Logo testing.." warning
2º) The following errors : " Cannot install this hardware" and " The
data is invalid" inside the same window

Finally the hard drive appears in the device manager under "Disk
Drives" with exclamation mark and yellow background.

Does anyone know whats going on?

Thanks in advance for helping

Have you recently installed a new HD? If so does this happen all the time
and is it a recent event?
Whose HD?

Hard drives typically do not require device drivers to be loaded. Nearly all
of them will use disk.sys and it's associated class/classpnp drivers. I say
"typically" and "nearly all" because I know of no HDD that really requires a
low level driver other than those stated. The bottom driver is a
port/miniport driver that controls the HBA the disc is connected to. Above
that driver sits disk.sys the class drivers and then the storage stack. None
of those are what I would call a driver for given disk.

What I would do is remove any new hardware/drivers you have installed and do
a system restore to a point prior to installing that hw. Once you have a
clean system, then install the hardware again. If you haven't installed new
hw, then do a system restore to a point where you know things were working
properly and you were not getting this message.

Hi Gary

Thanks for replying.
The problem occurs after restoring an image from Iomega REV.
Unfortunately I've disabled System Restore feature and I can't get a
clean system.
I've read it might be because a lack of rights in some registry keys
and I've tried to modify them but I'm not sure they were the right
ones. Is it documented somewhere?

thanks again

Hindsight hurts, don't it? I use System Restore quite a bit and will not
disable it on any system. I also snap images of discs using ShadowProtect
Desktop, but SR is a quick hip-pocket solution at times.

You can always try booting to the install CD and doing a repair. That will
copy new system files over existing files. Barring that, you may be looking
at a full install.
