Disk Defragmentation

My computer is running pretty slow at start up, and is in need of some
defragmentation. I have a C and a D drive, of which the D drive is the
System Recovery. It (the D drive) needs to be defragged badly, but only 5%
of free space is available, and to defrag you need 15%.
The prompt recomends to delete some files before defragging, but then a
message appears "Warning! This area of your hard disk (or partition)
contains files used for your system recovery. Do not delete or alter these
files. Any change to this partition could prevent any recovery later." I
did put these files on CD's, so is it OK to delete some, or all, of these
files?
Thank you.

Defragging will not make your system measurably faster.
Where you need to start is in the startup. You are probably
loading too many apps robbing your system of its resources.
Start>Run>type MSCONFIG>click OK>Startup tab. Now see
all the apps that are checked>enabled. Uncheck/disable the
ones you do not need to start, except your Anti-virus>click
Apply>Close>reboot. You can always start the apps on their
respective icons or you can enable them later if needed. :~)
Don't be concerned about defragging your "D" drive.

Don't mess with your recovery partition. It is not slowing your machine
down. Also, it seems strange that the recovery partition would be very
fragmented, but, nonetheless, it don't matter :)

D will not affect the operation of XP on C.
How much free space is on C?

By system recovery do you mean a recovery partition set up by the computer
vendor? Or is this something you created? If the former don't bother with
it. It doesn't slow down your start up. For a slow startup see what's
loading at startup and decide if you need it. Do some clean boot
troubleshooting to see what's holding things up.
