disk cleanup and defrag

start disk cleanup in xp and you hear the system whirring
away but nothing in the graphic....about 3 green progress
markers show then all stops.....cancel this and all
computer movements are slowed right down. have to
re-boot to go back to normal speed.

same in defrag....starts off fine then nothing, no
progress and computer functions slow down...

any advise will be much appreciated.

Len,

Suggest you run a ScanDisk (probably will require a reboot). I had a drive
go bad and the bad sectors did to my defrag and cleanup
what you are describing.
