disk cleanup won't work

I have windows xp and when i try to use my disk cleanup it wont work, sometimes it shows up and other times it shows up but never does anything, my defrag wont work either, is there something i can do to get these things to work, its making my computer run slow

The disk cleanup tool most often gets stuck on the
