disk clean-up not working

I am using microsoft XP on a fairly new Toshiba laptop.
Ever since a couple of months ago, I've been unable to
use the Disk Cleanup function. After I start the process,
I get the usual message saying that disk cleanup is
calculating how much space I'll be able to free on C. The
thing is, the process never ends, and even after several
hours of 'calculating' I am unable to clean the disk.

any idea why this is happening and how I can take care of
this problem?

yes, I saw your post earlier. No idea, actually. I ran a
search on similar problems in this database, and the
replies seem to have been rather technical - anyhow, I am
not sure how to proceed at this stage. Strange that such
a simple problem should occur. we are not alone anyhow...
