Disk Boot Failure

When starting up my computer I get a message that states:
Verifying DMI Pool Data.....
Boot from Cd: Boot from CD: Disk Boot Failure, Insert
System Disk and Press Enter

I don't have the system disk with me, nor can I obtain a
copy easily.

I can get into the CMOS Setup Utility and that's it.

I do not want to wipe my computer and start over as I'll
lose a bunch of documents I need to keep (and which have
not been backed up as of yet). Can someone please help me.

As a first step, do this:

- Format a floppy disk on some other Win2000 PC.
Don't do it on a Win9x PC - it won't work.
- Copy these files from the \i386 folder of your Win2000 CD
to A:\
ntldr
ntdetect.com
- Create a file a:\boot.ini with these lines
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=3
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
- Boot the machine with this floppy

Now report here what you get.

I am rather uneasy about your statement "which have
not been backed up as of yet". It seems you live in
blissful ignorance. Important documents don't get backed
up just before your system fails - you must back them
up every week! Chances are that you can save them this
time. Chances are also that sooner or later you lose the
lot, unless you develop the habit of backing them up to a
different medium every week.
