disconnect, reconnect = no connection

Greetings!

Re Win XP Pro

This is driving me crazy!

Every now and then my connection will drop (DUN) and redial/reconnect.
However, I am no longer able to access the internet. It is as though there
is no connection but everything seems to indicate otherwise (icon, status,
etc.). I tried disconnecting and reconnecting but once this happens
there's no easy recovery except rebooting. I've tested with two modems so I
think the modem is not the problem. I also created another connection with
another access number. No luck. It goes through the dialup sequence, sound
is normal connection sound, but no internet connection. The only thing that
solves the problem is a reboot!!

Any ideas?

Thanks,

janusz

Ummmmm. I suppose that's a likely cause. However, I've had the same
problem with two different brands of modems, SoundBlaster and USR. I have
another machine (Win 98SE) using the same USR model modem and I use the same
line, DUN connection and I've never had this kind of disconnect-no real
connect problem.

What I have noticed is that these disconnects seem to occur when there is a
url change, page change, etc. -- I've not noticed it happening while I'm
reading a page (no activity). It is as though it is too sensitive or
something. :)

Hi,

I have seen this happen when the computer is left idle. Your case seems to
be a bit different. Even though, check your settings here:

Right click My Computer Icon/Properties/Hardware/Device Manager. Expand USB
Controllers/Double Click USB Root Hub/Propterties. Select Power Management
and uncheck: Allow the computer to turn off the device to save power.
