If you meant to ask about but forgot to mention that you are using a
dial-up connection and THAT is what is getting disconnected:
Internet options -> Connections
If the option isn't present you need, perhaps you are using some 3rd
party dialer, like AOL's (been more than a decade since I had to bother
with a user still using AOL and back then they had their own dialer and
created their own bogus network connectoid).
Since you are another NTL user, why not ask them for help with
connectivity to their service that you pay for?
