disappearing photos

Dear all,

I have some photos inserted onto a doc. The appear fine in print preview
but otherwise only as a black border (not a red cross). I have looked under
tools but cannot see why the pic does not appear...any thoughts?

Tools > options > view > uncheck picture placeholders.
