I don't want to scroll down to the double arrows at the
bottom of my favourites menu or within its subfolders to
find items that have "disappeared". How can I disable
this annoying feauture permanently?

If you're talking about START | PROGRAMS showing only your
most-often used programs until you hit the double-arrows,
try this:

Right-click on the START button.
Choose PROPERTIES
Choose START MENU.
Click CUSTOMIZE.
Under Advanced Start Menu Options, scroll down to Use
Personalized Menus and uncheck the box.

You may notice this same behavior in other programs as
well, such as Outlook and IE. I believe each program has
individual procedures for cancelling this annoyance.
Check your docs in each for "Personalized Menus."

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced and uncheck
Use personalized Favorites
