disappearing DVD drive

ok, since i upgraded to vista ultimate on friday, i have noticed the
CD/DVD drive disappearing

if i put in a CD or DVD and try to search, it simply disappears from
explorer as if there never was a drive connected. if i reboot it will
show again, but as soon as i attempt to access it, it disappears.

with CD's it takes longer, it may play for a bit, or start to install
a program, but it soon disappears from view.

any ideas why this might be happening?

I have what i thought was a separate issue, but is perhaps related:
the computer freezing, needing a hard shut down to move past it.

i noted a few of the last times this has happened-
clicking on browse to search for a printer driver
loading up windows
printing a page and browsing web
browsing for drivers to load up scanner
loading skype at initial start
typing in IE browser
searching DVD drive in windows explorer

alot of these seems to be related to searches and the drive seems to
disappear during searches too... which makes me suspicious of what is
happening here...

any ideas where to start or what the problem might be?

thanks

do you have Itunes installed ??

This is a common problem with the Gear drivers Itunes uses for burning, it
hijacks the drive and makes them inaccessible to windows.
If this is the case there is a registry patch to disable burning in itunes,
which will enable your drives to windows again. (google for Vista, Itunes,
GearAspi)

If this is not the case, make sure you have the correct and most current
drivers installed for your drive (check mfg website)

Sounds like a hardware problem. My first guess would be: reseat
the cables.

The last time I had a problem like this it was the drive itself. For now
let's hope it does have something to do with your ITunes, or maybe your
upgrade to Ultimate (although that seems odd), and that it's simpler to fix.

does not work, so do not count on this feature.

for now, i simply uninstalled itunes, and that seems to have fixed the
issue.
i tunes is not necessary in any way for me, so i just offed it.
but the drive could be going bad as well.... i'll have to keep a check
on it for the next couple of days

I OFTEN get this too....and I dont use I-Tunes to burn - just to rip.

Sometimes I have A, C, D, E (DVD) , F (CD) and removable G (A drive, though
enabled will not actually WORK under Vista, & never has). Other times,
completely randomly I have no F drive or E drive only for it to re-appear
minutes later, or hours later, or on reboot.

Happens WITHOUT necessarily having used one or the other drives, & without
having burnt or played from one or the other....just....DISAPPEARS and
REAPPEARS (eventually)

Every time there is an iTunes update and I install it, it knocks out my DVD
drive and I have to do a registry edit to fix. I forget where I got the fix
but it has something to do with removing the upper and lower filters in the
registry.
Since there are so many iTunes updates all the time this is getting
annoying.
I wish they would fix it!

Do the fix -- then export the reg key

Then when you have to do the fix again just import the reg key -- and you should be good to go.
