disabling menus

Does anyone know of a way to quickly disabled the Format menu? I am teaching
a class on Styles and I want to force students to go to the Styles and
Formatting panel instead of the Format Menu or Format toolbar. Does anyone
have any suggestions? I suspect the Word will not allow disabling a menu.

Thanks!

Assuming you're using Word 2003 from the wording of the question... if you
can limit them to using specific templates/documents, you can use Tools -
Protect - Limit formatting to a selection of styles. This prevents the use
of direct formatting.

So... for example, if you open Normal.dot and protect it for this kind of
formatting, and then save it, students will not be able to use direct
formatting. This will force them to use styles. If you either do this for
all available templates or remove non-protected templates, you effectively
accomplish the stated purpose.

There are ways around this, but students who know those ways very likely are
already ahead of the game when it comes to styles in any event.

Excellent! Thanks Herb! You have come up with a creative problem to my
problem. You're a genius!

Let me rephrase that: You have come up with a creation SOLUTION to my
problem. Thanks again!
