Disabling A PC for Curfew

M

Matt

I want to give my nephew a PC for his room. Is there a way to set it up so
it shuts down at midnight every nite and refuses to function tell 7 am?
Also, is there anyway to remotely tell it to lock down such as when he is
grounded?

I already have my Internet router setup to shut off Internet access at
midnight but want the entire PC disabled if possible. He seems to miss alot
of school lately and my attitude if he is too sick for school he is too sick
to play on the computer for a few days.

Looking for software or maybe a device that does this.

I'd suggest you place the computer in a common area of the house rather than
in his room. Kids who do not have their computing habits scrutinized can
easy get into trouble with them including such things as opening themselves
up for dangerous chatting, surfing for porn, finding recipes for all sorts
of illegal activities. So rather than finding away to lock the system down
"in his room" why mot leave it open but where it can be monitored?

Seems if the adult sets a time limit to the computer use, that's the law.
Break the law and the nephew loses the computer. It's called parenting.

Don ... that is not the issue. Kids are kids and they will find a way around
it if possible. Offer something useful instead of criticizing things you
know nothing about. It is "parents" like you that have the wild kids in
college once they get out of your control.

The common area is a good idea, if the space is available. PC TimeKeeper is
a good product also.

Don Schmidt

I'm a dad, I do know about teaching a youngster responsibility, honesty,
keeping their word, making a contract and living up to it.

If kids can "find a way around it" what good is PC TimeKeeper?

R

RA

What a pile of horsepucky!
Isn't using an app like PC timekeeper keeping the kids under control? Do
they take it with them to college to keep them under control? How do they
manage to control themselves in college once they have a pc without PC
Timekeeper?
How do you know that Don has wild kids in college? How do you know what kind
of parent he is? And how do you know that he knows nothing about it?
I don't even have an opinion about the best way to control kids' surfing,
but I know that what works for one doesn't work for all. If you think using
an app to control surfing at home has a direct correlation to a kid being
wild in college, you are nuts.

J

JC HARRIS

RA...if you had read my whole post you would understand that my point is the
same as yours. Kids cannot be controlled. You do the best job you can and
then send them out into the world and hope that you got through to them. PC
TimeKeeper is just a tool to help a parent while the children are in their
house. Once they leave, they must face life on their own. You made a leap,
an illogical one at that, between my "wild kids" statement and controlled
surfing. My point was that controlled kids, and "contracts" at younger ages
only will lead to wildness once they lose the controls. The easiest girls in
my high school were the ones that went to the Catholic school through 9th
grade. Once the boundaries were taken away, they went nuts.

You should be aware that whatever you do to try and limit the child's access
to the computer, he will most like be able to defeat it.

As suggested, place it in an area where he can be directly supervised, or
build a rig with a server case that features a removable HDD bay and Power
supply. Remove them and lock them away during the restricted hours.

You made a wild, illogical and completely baseless leap when you typed
" It is "parents" like you that have the wild kids in college once they get
out of your control"
And I do not believe for one minute that every girl who came from Catholic
school to your high school went nuts.

I've got 2 teenagers and I know the anguish that PC's can cause for concerned
parents. We've tried all sorts of things - but nothing will stop a
determined kid!

But, if they circumvent your restrictions (whether they are verbal or a
program) they know they're doing wrong.

The point is that you teach them right from wrong. And, you supervise them.
If they step over the "line" they get consequences for their actions.
Making the consequences relate to the offense and keeping them reasonable
(rather than oppressive) is what adults do for kids.

Kid's will always hate this - but it's a part of growing up.

Without this, the kids will have to learn it on their own - and it will
delay or prevent their becoming mature adults (as it did for me - I was one
of those incorribiles when I was growing up).

Harry,

I agree with you. Until the nephew has proven that he can keep his grades
up, put the computer in a common area.

Amen, usasma. I was one of those incorrigibles myself too so I know of what
I speak. Luckilly there were no computers or internet when I was young. The
Navy has a way of getting that out of a guy. Thank God.

And RA, since you seem to be the literal type, there were 5 girls in my
class that came from the Catholic school and I had sex with every one of
them, and was married to one for a few years. In that strict definition, ALL
of them went nuts! ;-)

I daresay it's parents like YOU that have wild kids while they're still
young and at home.

That says more about your own lack of self control and lack of boundaries
than it does about theirs.

OPen command prompt [Start > Run >cmd]
Type this:
net user ayush /times:m-t,4am-5am

This will set the time limit [Only allow Monday to Tuesday and only between
4-5 am] for user account ayush. Modify it as you like. For complete list of
how to do it, type this in command prompt:
net help user
and scroll down to /times:
You can check after doing this by typing this:
net user ayush
where ayush is the user name

Now that everything is USB, you could remove the keyboard and mouse at
night. Use the front ports on the machine to avoid fumbling behind it.

Ignore the above if the machine is a laptop.

Also ignore it if the OP doesn't have USB keyboard and mouse. Not every
computer uses it.

If I'm not mistaken, that will only work on servers?
