All our computers are running XP Pro in a workgroup environment. On
Computer A I disabled SFS so as to share the "HR" folder specifically
for another user across the network.
This led to a host of problems as the computer A was sharing "other"
folders already, and when I disabled SFS these "other" folders had
their share permissions set to the default values (The user "Everybody"
can Read it, Max # of users, etc.) Problem is that users couldn't
access these "other" folders anymore, they kept getting prompted for
username and password -- and actually sometimes it wouldn't even prompt
them, it would just you can't access this network resource, see your
admin, yada yada.
So I figured out to get one user to be able to access the "HR" folder,
and yet still allow other users to access the "other" folders, I
enabled the "Guest" account as the only User on the HR folder and I
created another dummy account "GES" so the other users could use that
name and password to access the "other" folders.
This became a mess, username and passwords weren't working, people
weren't entering them correctly, and like I said, sometimes it won't
even prompt for a username/password, it just says "you can't access
this resource, see your admin".
So on Computer A, the only computer I disabled SFS on, I re-enabled SFS
so as to be rid of these problems and get back to where things were.
But now it is like there is a ghost setting or something because when
other users try to access anything on Computer A across the network
they are still either getting prompted for a username/password (which
doesn't work) or it just says you can't access this resource. But I
have returned the settings to how they were previously using SFS, so I
don't get it. I've googled all over and can't find any answer to why
it still thinks SFS is disabled. I've rebooted so many times, all the
computers in the network, and it still is happening. IF i have to
reinstall XP pro I swear we're switching to macs...
