disable XP & retain data

I am planning to replace a HDD that has XP installed. I would like to
disable XP on this drive. Install XP on the new HDD and then retrieve the
data from the old drive. Is there a way to turn off XP so that the new drive
is the only OS on the machine?

Use a cloning technology to clone your drive to the new one.
Sometimes the new drive will come with this product.

Otherwise - there is no "disable XP". Just don't boot to it.

I didn't want to copy the OS & software from the old drive because I intended
to not install some software and start w/ a clean OS to avoid leftover crap
from od installations.

1) Set the jumpers on your old hard drive to make it a "slave" drive

2) Unplug your old HDD from the system (power and data cable)

3) Install new HDD (setting its jumpers to "Master") and install XP on it.

4) Reconnect the old HDD with it still set as a "slave" drive.

Now you should see the old hard drive (with ALL files still intact) in
Windows explorer from the new installation of XP.
