Drive Partition

I have recently installed an new HDD and re installed XP.

When I have partitioned the C: I have set the size to 5gb for the XP
installation, and have given D: the remaining space.

Now that I am re installing various applications and file I had pre HDD
failure, I am finding that all the files are being copied into my 'User'
folder which in turn is in a 'Windows' system folder. As this drive only has
5gb it has very quickly run out of space.

How do I get all the files I copy onto the HDD to go into the 50gb space I
have on D: rather than the files automatically copying to C:?

Thanks

First - let me say that I believe with every bit of knowledge on the subject
I have that if you seriously only created a 5GB partition for the operating
system - that was a *bad* choice. I recommend 15 - 40GB. No matter how
custom you do all your installations (although you can accomplish a lot with
folder redirection and the likes) - that 5GB is just not going to do *you*
justice in the long run. You will run out of space, it will become
annoying, you will experience frustration and you may be one of the ones
that comes back here asking how to resize said partition.

My recommendation - redo it and just make (given the size of that drive -
60GB?) one single partition. Other than organization and perhaps backing
things up - you gain no advantage having the multiple partitions.

Ok, sounds like a sensible approach.

When I spoke to Dell regarding installing XP they suggested using the
MediaDirect CD to create 2 partitions to install XP and MediaDirect but was
at a loss as to why.

Is there a way that I can resize the C: drive now or do I need to re install
XP and speicfy the 1 partition size? I have seen a couple of posts
suggesting re sizing, but I seem to recall some saying that a resixe is not
possible if the D: drive has already been formatted?

Thanks

You need 3rd party software to resize the partitions, it's cheaper to delete
them and recreate if you haven't gotten too far in setting up your current
installation.

You have the option of starting over, in which case you can set a partition
size as suggested by Shenan, or you can use Acronis Disk Director, the best
3rd party Disk Management program around..
