Disable Offline Files?

Richard Morey

Hi,

Now that I have my group policies working I have succesfully redirect the My
Document folder for each user to a network share. The problem now is that
every time the users logs off their machines the computer is synchronizing
the "offline" folder.. How do I stop this? I have changed settings in the
GPO for the domain as below:

Default Domain Policy --> Computer Configuration --> Administrative
Templates --> Network --> Offline Files:

Enabled (Disabled)
Disable User Configuration of Offline Files (Enabled)
Synchronize all offline files before logging off (Disabled)
Disable "Make Available Offline" (Enabled)
Prevent Use of Offline Files folder (Enabled)
At logoff, delete local copy of user's offline files (Disabled)
Subfolders always available offline (Disabled)

Default Domain Policy --> User Configuration --> Administrative
Templates --> Network --> Offline Files:

Disable User Configuration of Offline Files (Enabled)
Synchronize all offline files before logging off (Disabled)
Disable "Make Available Offline" (Enabled)
Prevent USe of OFfline Files folder (Enabled)

When I run GPRESULT /v this is what I get:

I'm assuming that the NETCACHE policies shown above correspond to the
offline folder settings that I have set since there are the same # of
entries for those under Computer Policy and User Policy as I have set in the
GPO.

I tried changing all the settings in the GPO on the server to the default
"Not Configured" setting and changed the settings for "Do Not Automatically
Make Redirected Folders Avialable Offline" to "Enabled" in the local policy
on the XP client machine but that did not do the trick.

I did catch the "options" and then "Setup " buttons when the user logs off
and the machine is synchronizing and so I was able to disable it that way,
but the "off line" arrows still appear.. and the "Enabled Offline Folder"
option is checked but greyed out.

Do I have to change a setting on the local machine to turn off offline
folders (in addition to or instead of the settings I have changed) ?

Thanks,

Rich

Should work. Did you go to the properties of the parent share(s) and disable
offline file caching therein?

Certain policies, apply to certain OS or higher version.
Check for the corresponding policies, whether it will be applied to all
the OS you have on your clients.

(Also the client must be part of domain, (having a computer account on the
AD, and joined the domain correctly, otherwise the policies won't apply.)

Hi excuse me for jumping on thisn one,

Did you go to the properties of the parent share(s) and disable offline file
caching therein?

is this on the user share or the folder that contains the user share, if
it's the former can it be scripted in anyway thanks

Hi --

Well I found the setting on the server and turned off the caching.. I won't
be able to test this until this evening when most of the users have left the
office, so I will report back later..

But thank you very much for your response!

HI Again --

That change on the server seemed to do the trick, but on some machines
I see the arrows for offline folders and on some machines I don't see
them. The machines are all running Windows XP.

Wherever the share is...don't know how to script, but many others do!
