whenever I try to delete an invalid shortcut windows starts searching for the
non-existent file the shortcut is supposed to point to. I have to click twice
on "cancel" to stop these annoying searches. is it possible to disable this
function? there must be a registry key that controls this...

Thanx for the links, it seems, however, that it is impossible to switch off
this function altogether. Even when setting NoResolveSearch, NoResolveTrack
and LinkResolveIgnoreLinkInfo to 1 (=Do not use) windows still "displays a
message explaining that the file has not been found". Plus it asks whether
the user wants the invalid shortcut to be deleted. This is very annoying if
you load dll-libiraries into windows explorer that are triggered on
shortcut-rightclick / DEL-button hit. In such a case windows will still
display the notification dialog warning about the invalid shortcut and
suggesting to remove it.

A walkaround would be to load only such dll libraries into windows explorer
that are triggered manually, not automatically every time you rightclick a
shortcut

Use a program like Empty Temp Folders or EasyCleaner that have a Find Broken
shortcuts utility.

Guess you already found these, or similar.
