I'm trying to take away Internet Explorer from my kids'
accounts.

I'm going into run --> gpedit.msc and looking through the
various administrative templates. However, I don't know
which template is the correct one. Further, once I find
the template, I'm not sure how to configure it so that it
only restrict certain accounts.

Can anyone help?

There are settings in Group Policy that may restrict access to the internet through
Internet Explorer somewhat, but they are not foolproof. You really need to use a
personal firewall to block access to the internet altogether for all applications.
You need to make sure that your kids do no have administrator powers on your computer
or they will be able to reverse any configuration. Assuming they are not, you could
install a personal firewall and configure it to not allow any access to the internet.
Then when you want to use the internet, you could disable the firewall being sure to
enable it when done. Zone Alarm is a good firewall for novice users and free for
personal use. There is a product called PortsLock that can have different firewall
configurations based on logged on user and it is free to try. --- Steve

In a non-domain environment, the Group Policy Editor will not restrict
functions/features for specific users.

You're on the right track though.

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Tips, Advanced Registry Editing for
instructions on how to load the "kid's" portion of the Registry into REGEDIT
while you're actually logged on to your account.

Then go to the Registry key that you named in HKEY_USERS.

Example: HKEY_USERS\Kids1

Then continue down into this branch of the Registry until you get to:

HKEY_USERS\Kids1\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
(note this is only an example. Use the name you actually gave the Kids1 key)

In the right pane, right click in a blank area and select New, DWord value.
Name it DisallowRun. Then double click the value you just created and set
it to 1

Now, right click on the Explorer subkey in the left pane, select New, and
select Key. Name the new key DisallowRun. Highlight the key you just
created.

Right click in the right pane and select New, String value and name it 1
(that's the number one). Double click the new value you just created and
enter IEXPLORE.EXE

You can add more applications by incrementing the number of the value and
entering the name of the EXE file. MSIMN.EXE for Outlook Express, CALC.EXE
for Calculator and etc.

When you're finished, make sure you highlight HKEY_USERS\Kids1 (or whatever
you named it) and then click File, Unload Hive. Otherwise, an error will
occur when that user tries to log on to the computer.

Hey there,

You may want to try Browse Control for this. Allows you to just turn
the net on/off with the click of a button and also make a "white list"
of sites if you want to give kids access to only the sites you
specify. You can also use it to block any applications from Chat to
P2P sharing to Games -- just pull whatever you want onto a block list
and your kids CANT get around it :)

Its something a little different then what's out there so check it out
if you'd like.
