Disable - if not in MSCONFIG , then where?

Where else and how else can I disable items other than in MSCONFIG under
WindowsXP?

In the registry, primarily. MSConfig was designed as a
troubleshooting tool, not a system tweaker.

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

If it's not under startup or services in MSCONFIG, you can try the registry
under hkey_local_machine -- software -- Microsoft --windows -- current
version -- run (I think I got the sequence right...)

It can also be starting in the registry under Current User instead of Local
Machine.

If you're not comfortable poking around in the registry, there are programs
that you can use to enable/disable startup programs, and the advantage is
that you can get things back again if you need them. If you delete things in
the registry and don't have a backup, they're gone forever.

Heres another way to disable services. This way will
change how services run each time you boot up. start
control panel, select performance and maintenance, select
administation. If you want to learn about each service go
to http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm If your
interested in improving performance follow grid for
use "save mode" heading.
If your haven't receieved sp2 yet, once you finish
changing your services. Go to windows update and re set
automatic.

Thanks a lot for the info.

I am hesitant about SP2, read too many concerns about holes in it, both here
in the newsgroups and in PCMAG and Maximum PC.

The Quicken bill reminder can be turned off in options from within the
program itself. Actually, that's the correct way to do it rather than
from the registry or from msconfig. If you're using Quicken to do on
line banking, it may turn it on again.

Thanks, I did not know that.

After all these years of using Quicken, from the DOS days!
