Flash updates of hardware BIOS/firmware can be problematic and if
something goes wrong during the process it can result in the device
(in this case your dvd recorder) being totally unusable, perhaps
permanently.
What leads you to believe that you need to update the firmware in this
new device?
on the sony web site they recomed that you update with the flash also i have
had problems with nero when i try to recode a dvd moive non protected it

Usually, to update a firmware/BIOS, you should create a DOS boot disk and
place the updates (flash program and firmware updates) on to this disk. Then,
boot the PC with this disk and proceed with the update.
