can't write to rewritable CD or DVD

My husband bought a new Sony DRU-800A DVD/CD Rewritable Drive. It worked all
right...play DVD etc...Only problem is when we put a new Rewritable CD in and
tried to copy photos onto it. It appears " Incorrect function" and couldn't
detect there was a disk in the drive. This doesn't happen when we put another
CD OR DVD which had already had content on it . My husband spent whole
weekend trying to work this out...really frustrating...

Please help us~~~~~.... Thanks. Xuru

If you right click the drive in windows explorer does it show a "Recording"
tab and is it set "Enable CD recording on this drive".

Are you using windows explorer to copy to the CD or do you use some other
recording software.

You are sure the rewritable disk is a CD not a DVD (sorry for the obvious
questions but windows cannot write DVD's)

Thanks Neil for your reply...

The problem is ...let's say...even if we use the E drive as a normal CD
drive...it doesn't even recognize there is a blank disk in the drive...it can
play DVD, read CD but can't recognize a blank disk..why is that?I know I
should format a blank disk before I can write things onto it...but if the
computer doesn't even recognize the disk how could I ever be able to format
something doesn't"exsit"? I am useing XP...right click on the drive...doesn't
have the option you mentioned. .

I had a similar problem with my new "NU Global" internal RW DVD/CD
Burner hardware. The software which came with the Hardware called
"Record Now by Sonic" kept saying insert a blank or rewritable disc in
drive! when I tried copying a DVD which my daughters had paid to have
all our old cine films copied too.
I initially thought it had been copy protected (encrypted) but it was
resolved by buying better burning software than the program which came
free with the burner. I ended up buying some DVD copying software called
"1Click DVD Copy". It copied the DVD perfectly. (And the software help
tells you where to download some free software which enables you to copy
encrypted DVD's)

You can trial the software for free before buying!!

I just installed the same burner last week and love it, sorry you are having
problems with it.
Even through this is a new burner from Sony it is already up to revision 4
for the firmware, new version is "ky04" you might want to try updating this.
I had problems writting to DVD+RW with true image until I updated the
firmware at that time the latest was ky03 and all is working as it should.

Just download the file ky04 (or ky03, I know this one works) to your desktop
remove any disk that is in the burner and double click on the file you just
downloaded then follow the prompts. :)

P.S. If you correct your problem please post back to this same thread on
what you did thanx.

Another reason might be that the RW disks need formatting first?

One more thing, this burner comes with Nero Express, did you install it?
If so does the Nero program detect the CD/DVD in the drive?
You might be able to format it with Neros InCd which is on the CD.

Sorry I didn't get back sooner but my outlook express isn't showing all your
posts.

MS have a check you can do by looks in the registry but if there is no
"recording " tab then windows will not see the drive as recordable which is
why you cannot see a blank disk.

Have a look at this
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316529 but be
careful if you are not used to editing the registry.

You could try uninstalling the drive in device manager, reboot and when XP
finds the drive again it may see it as a recordable drive.

best of luck, let me know if it helps

Thank you Neil,

My husband tried a different software rather than Nero..now it works
perfectly with Roxio...no problem at all...maybe Nero was not compatible with
our computer.

Big thanks to all the guys who tried to help...Cheers.. :)
