Disable Auto Restart on BSOD

R

Robb Pierce

I run into problems as a tech all the time with PC's in a reboot loop
flashing a BSOD. How am I to diagnose the problem when I can't see the
error, especially when Safe Mode BSODs also. On rare occasion, pressing F8,
there is an option for Disable Auto Reboot, but seeing this is very rare.
Does anyone know how to disable auto restart when a PC is failing. Microsoft
obviously allows you to do this to a computer that works just fine, but I
can't get to the OS to uncheck that box. Thanx.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work
substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only.

Gerry,

Gerry, you normally give good advice; not this time.
No-one wants to read posts correctly here, for some unknown reason!

He wants advice on when it won't boot in Normal OR Safe Mode.

What is your computer make and model?

What do you have by way of Windows XP CD?

The safe mode options are part of the operating software. I have never
heard of any customised versions that does not include Safe mode. You
have some impediment affecting access. You need to keep tapping the F8
key as soon Windows starts to load. This is a kittle hit and miss. On
some Wireless keyboards the F lock defaults to Off so you need to
depress the F lock key before tapping the F8 key. It can be simpler to
temporarily replace the keyboard with an older style wired keyboard. You
can even usually connect wired keyboards to a laptop.

I did read the post correctly. Normally the F8 key. without or with the
wired keyboard, will bring up the Safe Mode Options. If there is a more
obscure hurdle this can be investigated when we know the computer make
and model.

Gerry, he was stating previous cases of his where he could not get into F8
startup options to do anything.

You did NOT read it properly.

We shall see if and when he replies?

What fate awaits a Troll who posts a follow up. I sensed in the other

So what you get when you press the F8? Do you get a Blue screen with three
Boot options:
CD-ROM
HDD
Floppy... etc

If you get this blue screen then I guess your Machine been imaged with other
machine in the installation process originally.

Try to Select the HDD and press Enter while pressing F8 to get to the Safe
Mode or the Boot up options for the HDD. Try many times not just once. It is
all about timing or getting the F8 time correct to be able to get to the Safe
Mode Option.

wow, let me try this again, because you dont seem to read the post correctly:

this is not a one time problem. As a tech, I deal with this all the time on
multiple computers, not just one, so make/model dont make a difference.

computer is stuck in a reboot flashing a BSOD for such a short moment, you
can't read the error message because it reboots instantly. pressing f8 and
attempting safe mode, or any other choice does the same thing.

on many computers i've worked with, after pressing f8, and getting the menu,
the option to disable auto restart is NOT there, just safe mode, normal,
lasts known..., etc. sometimes i do see this option for disable auto
restart, but not on all computers. This is where the problem lies, how to
disable auto restart when that option is not there. can i create a generic
startup disk/c to perform this.

i've since used my digital camera to video the screen during the boot, and
when playing back, pause on that split second to view the error. its
rediculous but it works.

hopefully you can better understand this now. i recommend reading it more
than once, maybe 3 times for a couple of you. thanx.

Why can't we deal with a single computer where the problem exists.

..What is the computer make and model?

What is there by way of Windows XP CD?
