dirty volume

I have windows xp home, and for a few months I have been experiencing
system freezes and recently a serious error message. I ran chkdisk for
the error. Today I had another system freeze, restarted the computer,
and received a dirty volume message. This is the first time I have
received this message.

I checked a number of posts on this group. I ran event viewer.

One warning "windows saved the registry while while an application or
service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by
the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded
when it is no longer in use".

Errors:

Faulting application aim.exe, version 5.9.3861.0, faulting module
unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x1221254f.( AOL Instant
Messenger)

Fault bucket 296496975.

Faulting application acrord32.exe, version 7.0.8.218, faulting module
search.api, version 7.0.0.1333, fault address 0x00013000.

Dell has suggested to use Dell PC restore, which means losing a lot of
data.

Any suggestions for workarounds?
Thanks.
