I install DirextX9.0b (XP) from Windows Update, but it
does not install. The DirectX diagnostic tool (system
tab) says DirectX9.0b is installed, however the Files tab
says earlier versions are installed. How can I replace
the old files with the new updated files?

If DxDiag says v9.0b is installed, then it is so :) No need to worry about
the individual versions of the files. If the diagnostics is OK, then your
DX-installation is OK :)
