I just down loaded Microsoft's update for DirectX (9.0b).
Question: Is there an executable program (*.exe)that I can
run to see if my computer is now running this newer
directX update ??

Thanks
Frank............

EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thanks very much Bruce.

On the screen that comes up there is a couple of lines
that say: "System Manufacturer--To be filled by O.E.M." and
"System Model--To be filled by O.E.M."

I custom built the computer I am running from the MB up.
Is there any way I can change these to lines to show me as
the manufacturer and the model of computer I am using ??

I have tried checking through out the registry and can
find these lines but when I edit the lines it doesn't
work. This same information is also shown when I go to
START--PROGRAMS--ACCESSORIES--SYSTEM INFORMATION.

I am running Win2000 Pro.

Thanks again Bruce for your dxdiag.exe help.

Using Notepad, create (or modify, if it already exists) a text file
called OEMINFO.INI in \winnt\system32, with the following
format:

[General]
Manufacturer=
Model=

[Support Information]
line1=
line2=
line3=
line4=

Put whatever text you want to display in the various fields. You
can also display a company logo or other graphic by creating an
image called OEMLOGO.BMP and placing it in the same folder
(\winnt\system32). The bitmap is limited to 180x114 pixels in size.

There's no need to reboot after making these changes.

O.K. Rick, I created a file using notepad with the exact
format as you suggested. I saved it to the folder
\winnt\system32 as OEMINFO.INI. I did re-boot and then
checked the System Information in the START--PROGRAMS--
ACCESSORIES--SYSTEM INFORMATION and the manufacturer and
model lines still say the same (i.e. To be filled by
O.E.M.)

I also tried going to the Dos Prompt and using the dos
command Copy Con, I created the same file using the same
format and saved it to the \winnt\system32 folder and re-
checked again. Same old lines as before nothing has
changed. So what I'm I doing wrong ??

I appreciate your help on this matter Rick.

No. I'm afraid that specific information is being read directly
from the motherboard's chipset. Only the motherboard manufacturer
would have the option of having the information so embedded.

The only place I'm aware of that allows the PC owner to specific
such things is on the General Tab of My Computer's Properties. This
displayed information is partially controlled by
%WinDir%\System32\Oeminfo.ini and %WinDir%\System32\Oemlogo.bmp.

.
Well Bruce, I think you have hit the reason I can't
change this OEM information in the places I wanted to.
However, after going to My Computer and checking the
Properties there, I did find the file information I had
created as the OEMINFO.INI file. It also shows a box now
that has all of the Support Information that was part of
the ini file too.

Thanks Bruce for all of your help. It's taking me a while
but I am learning.

Frank....
