Unable to Install DirectX 9.0c

I am attempting to update DirectX 9.0b to DirectX 9.0c. Multiple
installation attempts have all failed. During install the following message
is displayed: "The components installed are now ready for use", which is NOT
TRUE. The "dxdiag" tool still shows DirectX 9.0b. Upon researching various
web forums I discovered that this appears to be a common problem... yet no
solution has been found. DirectX 9.0c is a required component for some newer
software apps (they will not install or function without it). Various
troubleshooting attempts have all failed. I've been stumped by this problem
for weeks... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. -

Hi Brian, Thanks for the reply. I'm not very comfortable with your
recommendation though. Microsoft clearly states that "... by design you
cannot remove DirectX." Microsoft does not provide any uninstall for the
DirectX runtime. True, there are 3rd party programs out there that claim to
remove DirectX; however they are unsupported and you use them at your own
risk. I have seen folks in these forums whose machines are never quite the
same again after using them. Is your recommendation safe? Thanks. - Jeremy

Um. Directx is a one way street without a HELL of a lot of work.
