Directx won't install on XP

Alan

I am having some issues getting Starcraft/Warcraft on IPX
gaming. I can't connect nor see any games. When I start
DXDiag I see the following errors:

DirectPlay8 TCP/IP Service Provider Error
DirectPlay8 IPX Service Provider Error
DirectPlay8 Modem Service Provider Error
DirectPlay8 Serial Service Provider Error

I have tried to re-install DX9b and I get this error message:

The Software you are installing has not passed the Windows
Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP

This software will not be installed. Contact your system
administrator.

Hi Alan,

You possibly disabled the Cryptography service by "tweaking"
XP using well intended but bad advice from a site or magazine.

1. Click Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services
Scroll down to "Cryptographic Services", double click it and
change Startup type to: Automatic and click the "Start" button.

2. If the problem persists, go to c:\windows\system32 and rename
the catroot2 directory to catrootold. Catroot2 might be too full.

3. Save and then Open the "DX9 Logo Error" patch on Line 189
for WinXP at: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

4. Repairing Windows is our final option. Boot from your Windows
CD (you may have to press F12 while starting up, or change the
bootup order in your BIOS) and then follow the instructions at:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm Good luck! :)

In addition to what Jimmy suggested, make sure you're running SP1 (or SP1a)
on your system.

Good for you, Alan. Unfortunately, there are a couple web sites which have
"tweaking" suggestions to turn off services in Windows XP, but they don't
say what the results can be.

Actually, the solution is to make sure to have SP1 installed and that
Cryptographic Services are enabled and running.
