DirectPlay8 over IPX does not work

Bob

Hello,

I've installed IPX on both my Windows XP machine and my Windows 98 machine,
however I cannot initiate a successful "test session" using DxDiag,
DirectPlay8 on IPX. Both machines are running the latest version of DirectX.
All drivers on both machines check out fine (i.e.: they're certified). This
network problem is keeping me from successfully running a multiplayer game
that requires IPX (Star Wars Episode 1 Racer).

Any ideas as to what is wrong? Thanks!

Does a TCP/IP session work?

Off the top of my head, I don't know what's wrong but I can offer one
suggestion. IPX is not a routable protocol so you'll need to have both
computers plugged into the same hub or switch. If you're using a network
cable to connect the computers it needs to be a cross-over cable. A regular
network cable won't work.

Do you have more than one NIC installed. I remember encountering an IPX
problem a long time ago that went away when I removed the second NIC on the
computer.

Thanks for the feedback!

To answer your questions, YES, a TCP/IP session works. And I do
(unfortunately) have two NICs installed. One is connected to my cable modem
and the other to the hub of my network. Any more ideas as to how to remedy
this problem?

Sincerely, Bob

I found a solution!!! If I disable my primary internet connection by right
clicking on "Local Area Connection," and selecting "disable," then the
game works fine! Of course, I lose my internet connection while playing the
game, but who cares. Just thought I'd share this info in case anyone else is
having similar problems.
