Directx failed to copy a required file

Anyone know how to get directx (9C) installed after you
receive the message "Directx failed to copy a required
file".
I was trying to install sims 2 when it asked for a
directx installation. I get the same results whether I
try the download from the cd or microsoft.
I've tried it in safe mode, clean boot, and I have also
tried removing the directx folder keys from the
registry. None of these things worked. Surely others
have seen this issue, and have resolved it. Apparently
something is corrupted.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,
BB
:)

Few things to try:

Run checkdisk.

My Computer
-> Right click your harddrive and go to Properties
--> Click Tools
---> and then on Check now
----> Click Start

OK, go to Start
-> Control Panel
-->Admin Tools (you'll need to be logged on as a user with admin rights)
---> Services
----> Scroll down until you find Cryptographic Services, double click it and
set the startup type to automatic if it's not already started or set to
that.

Also make sure to empty your temp folders, disable all background apps.

You may also need to restore your registry prior to manually removing the DX
lines from it, System Restore will also do this.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't done a chkdisk, but I
honestly don't hink it's a hard drive issue. My crypt
services are set to auto....temp folders are empty...c:
has only 2gig of space left, but that shouldn't cause an
issue, should it? I have tried system restore as
well....and the clean boot made sure no back ground apps
were running. What else???

Checkdisk will also scan for corrupted files. Does DX actually mention any
files it can't copy?

One more thing you could try, have you tried doing it logged on as a
different user?

I have the same exact problem. I've tried MS & from other games no luck, it
always hangs. Did you ever get it fixed?

I was wondering if you ever fixed this problem? I have the exact same deal;
I've checked everything I know and tried installing straight from MS and from
several game disks. I upgraded my video card and am ready to kill someone.
Any suggestions?

Perhaps you should post to one of the DirectX newsgroups? They are used to
dealing with DirectX problems.

Hi Chris,

If DirectX 9 gives you an error indicating that it cannot
copy a required file and you're running XP, try these
steps one at a time to see which one solves the problem:

1. Make sure you're using an Administrator's account

2. Click Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services
Scroll down to "Cryptographic Services", double click it and
change Startup type to: Automatic and click the "Start" button.

3. Install Service Pack 2 from the Windows Update Site

4. Close all programs including antivirus / firewall software

5. Right click your C:\Windows folder, select Properties and
uncheck the "Read-only" Attribute. Click OK on the popup box
to "Apply changes to this folder, subfolder, and files". (default.)

Hope this helps you fix that error that you and previous others have
reported. Please let me know which of the 6 steps worked for you. :)

There is aKnowledgebase article about this problem ID 822798 dated Dec 21 about this problem. I tried to do everything in the article to no benefit.

Try posting to a DirectX newsgroup. There are several, all under the
microsoft.public.directx.* hierarchy. Give the DirectX folks a chance to
work with your issue.
