directory object not found

Trying to create a new user. Windows 2000 active
directory. I get an error that the user name already
exist. I did a search on the user name. I get another
person name. I tried to delete the second user name. I
get an error 'directory object not found'. How can I
clean up my active directory? Where is this directory?
It looks like the active directory has this user name, but
I can not find it...

thanks laura. i did follow the kb. it did compact my DS,
but it did not resolve the problem. i have a username
that i can not delete because LDAP folder can not be
found, but the username is somehow someplace. For example
i want to add (e-mail address removed), DS tells me that the
user is exist in the directory. i can not find it...

how can i search the DS and find the username that is
lingering out there... any utility
