Directly connecting laptop

I have a laptop and desktop both running XP. Can I hook
up a USB cable to both computers to connect them? If I
can, will it treat the connection as a new hard drive or
as a network type connection?

Not sure on a USB connection, but you should be ok with a direct serial
connection.
