When I attempt to reinstall DirectX, I immediately receive
the message "DirectX Setup has completed successfully,"
but DirectX is not installed. Why? - link is down etc
does anyone know the answer
version 8 installed on win xp pro

Have d/l the redist version - same result

Thanks - but if you read the post a bit more carefully -
its a copy/paste from one of the frequently asked
questions - but the link doesn't work
& I need to know how to resolve the problem - I've even
tried google without much luck

Okay, I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly what you're saying. You
said you attempted to "reinstall" DirectX. Does that mean DirectX was
installed before? If so, how did it get uninstalled - uninstall if not
exactly a normal option?

The message you received suggests DirectX 9 is installed. Are you sure
it's not? DirectX does not show up in Add/Remove programs - you have to see
which version is installed using the instructions found under the "How to
Determine Installed Version of DirectX" link on Microsoft's DirectX Support
Center web site.

You also said you downloaded the "redistributable" version. Was that the
full 30+ MB file? If so, what happened when you tried to install that?

Perhaps the answers to these might help someone more fully answer your
question.

Sorry - let me elaborate
1. its someone else's machine, so I can't give specs
2. He has dx8.1 installed on winxp pro
3. the quote below is from the faq on MS DX website
because it seems to match his problem
4. he d/l'd the redist and attempted to install dx 9B from
his desktop (has also tried it in safe mode)
5. He accepts the contract, then the installation program
tells him to click on next button to start the
installation process and h then recieves the "installation
completed" message immediatly after i click on the button.
6. on running dx diag it doesn't update any file and
dxdiag says that directx 8.1 is installed (after a reboot).

Any help here would be gratefully appreciated
