When I attempt to reinstall DirectX, I immediately receive
the message "DirectX Setup has completed successfully,"
but DirectX is not installed. Why? - link is down etc
does anyone know the answer
version 8 installed on win xp pro

This morning I managed to download and install DirectX9 from Microsoft's
download site, it took ages even on a 10 MB download link.

Go to downloads.com, search for directx9, downlaod
the "redistributable" version. This will allow you to
install it offline and avoid the hassles of dropped
connections ot "timeouts" during the installation.
This also allows you to close all background programs and
avoid possible corruption issues. The file is about 37MB I
believe.
