Direct formatting?

I have been only recently getting blue squiggly lines that show up underneath
text after changing the font or making other formatting changes. When I
right click over this text, the top choice on the context menu is "Replace
direct formatting with style normal." I don't want to do this. However, I
can't seem to find any place to turn off the blue squiggly lines and they are
quite disconcerting as I am a chemistry professor and work extensively with
superscripts, subscripts and other non-standard text entries. As usual, I
can't find anything in the help system about "direct formatting" (at least
not without reading through myriad non-related articles). How do I turn
these things off? Any suggestions?

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | uncheck the "Mark formatting
inconsistencies" box | OK.

This was very helpful. I thought I had searched and tried all possible
options for th is but obviously not. Thanks much.
