direct connect problem

I'm trying to set up two computers to transfer files in the same room. I'm
able to connect the Ethernet cards with a CAT5 UTP direct connect cable, but
when I use the direct connect cable between the two cards XP sets up a Local
Area Connection using the Ethernet cards.
Now when I try and set up a "new" advanced connection to connect directly
with another computer the only connection options left are the
communications port to select.
How can I get around this problem?
I am following these directions at the Microsoft help site,
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/814981

Regards
Joe

If you have a CAT5 cross over cable, you can share drives/directories on either computer and just drag and drop files across.
