Direct Connect parallel asks for password

I'm trying to get Direct Connect via parallel cable (the proper type of
cable) to work between a Win98 system and a new Windows XP Home system.
The purpose is to bring files across from the 98 system to the XP system.
The 98 system has no network card and no CD burner.
All seems to have been set up properly with 98 as the host and XP as the
guest (and vice-versa).
Whenever the XP system tries to connect to the 98 system (listening), we are
asked for a password on the XP system. The 98 system says it's asking for
or checking the password - then the connection fails as if the password were
wrong.

In order to alleviate this I have created a user on both machines with the
same name and password. This didn't help.

Also, I have installed NetBEUI and IPX on both machines. However, on the XP
machine, NetBEUI doesn't show up as an available protocol to be added to the
direct connection.

On the XP machine there is a choice of using PPP or SLIP. If I use SLIP, it
shows there's a connection but I can't see anything. If I use PPP then I'm
back into the password thing.

I've done this a few times before without this hassle. I'd appreciate
suggestions.

Thanks,

Fred
